"May I just say Cabernet hosted an AMAZING workshop with Kitiera. To be honest, being Romani, I am always a bit guarded when anyone says, 'Romani fusion.' I'm more guarded when they add 'with veil.' Add in 'with jazz and Egyptian' and I fear my grandmother would be rolling in her grave.
Wow. Just...wow. Kitiera merged Romani (Spanish, Turkish, and Russoles steps) with Egyptian with jazz seamlessly. She captured the emotional charge of Romani dance with the grace and sublime expression of Egyptian dance, with elements of jazz dance. I know nothing of jazz dance save 'Fosse' so I can't tell you what steps were jazz. The veil was not pretty-pretty veil but expressive veil, with Romani timed footwork that I am still trying to master during the barrel turn.
Kitiera gave a great talk about the emotions behind the dance, and behind Romani dance, and encouraged all of us to purchase the song from the group who played it (Iman by Solace), which is one of my personal favorites (I don't think bands often get enough credit). The warmup made my legs SHAKE, and they continued to shake until I got home that night.
I strongly recommend to all of us, if you have a chance, take the ModRom classes. No matter if you are vintage orientale, Egyptian, Turkish, Romani, Suhaila certified or not, you walk away with something tangible, and that's a great thing to be able to say after a workshop." -Rom Deussen , 2008
